The 2023-24 Doc Lombard Student Research Award winner is Christina Kijan, University of Utrecht, Netherlands.
Title of her project:The genetics behind class 2 malocclusion in Husky dogs.

The objective of this research is to identify the pathogenic variant responsible for class II malocclusion in sled dogs, such as Huskies. The candidate genes will be further validated in a cohort comprising cases and controls from several sled dog breeds, including Siberians from racing lines, and other lineages – Alaskan Huskies, European Sled Dogs, Alaskan Malamutes and mixed breed dogs of Northern descent.

The International Sled Dog Veterinary Medical Association (ISDVMA) offers The Doc Lombard Student Research Award named after Dr. Roland “Doc” Lombard, who was a sled dog veterinarian and World Champion musher. Doc Lombard contributed significantly to the health and welfare of the modern sled dog through his research.

 The ISDVMA will announce a call for 2025 research proposals from veterinary students with an interest in research on the health and well-being of racing sled dogs.

A chance to enter and receive an award is given each year.

The ISDVMA is an organization whose membership is composed of veterinarians and non-veterinarians with an interest in the health and well-being of canine endurance athletes. Stay tuned for next years opportunity to enter and win! A call for entries will be published on this website.
